Unfortunately, granite color choices are limited, but many people still choose it for a unique look. It is also a material that is known for easy maintenance. No scrubbing and no grout to clean, just a once yearly waxing. At one time granite was thought to be strictly for the super-rich and was known as a luxury item. Today it can be found in many homes, from the pre-fabricated to top-of-the-line custom builds.
Looking closely at granite, you can see many colors and crystals, but from far back it looks like a solid color. The most well-known granites are in shades of grey, back and white, while others come in warm browns and various earth tones. Some people choose granite that stands out and make it the focus of their kitchen, while others opt for more muted patterns.
Granite kitchen countertops
Scratches, stains, heat blistering and cracking aren’t a threat to granite, so hot casserole dishes and frying pans won’t make a mark.
Granite myths
It stains easily and permanently - Granite actually resists stains. If liquid is wiped up within several minutes no harm is done. Liquids can soak into granite and leave a dark spot though, but it will evaporate as long as the liquid isn’t oil. Oil can stain if it’s not wiped up, but you can use special compounds to draw it out of the stone.
It is absorbent - Although we just mentioned that it soaks up liquids, granite is less absorbent than many materials. An ability to withstand strong rain makes it popular in high-rise building materials.
Dark colors are harder - The hardest mineral found in granite is actually quartz, and it can be grey or white.
The pores hold bacteria - This is true, but no more so than with other countertops. Anti-bacterial soaps can alleviate any concerns.
Granite surfaces are generally competitive with other luxury materials, but the longevity makes it much more desirable to some buyers. Square footage can easily reach the upper double digits - about $80 but varies based on where you buy it.
